Awagami Factory

Awagami Factory is a manufacturer of Japanese paper. We actively incorporate new techniques while making the most of traditional techniques, and propose Japanese paper that fits the current lifestyle.

A craftsman carefully makes each sheet using the old-fashioned techniques of nagashi-suki and tame-suki.

Custom-made products called "ears" that make use of the random four sides unique to hand-made paper, beads, dried flowers, flower seeds, etc. are put in the paper, and thick paper that cannot be manufactured by machine using the "tame-suki" technique. We are manufacturing Japanese paper with quality.

Tokyo Handmade Washi Kobo mainly uses kozo and mitsumata to make paper.

Over the past 30 years or so, I have visited many paper-making areas, and when I saw the importance of raw materials and the way the materials were made, my predecessors cared for the local climate and materials while making paper. I felt it was expressed. I would like to aim for such paper making.

Eternal Japanese paper

thousandyears of durabilityTsutoiwaPure kozo Japanese paper

Gokayama in Toyama, famous for its gassho-zukuri style, has been making Etchu paper for over 1,200 years.

While inheriting the washi-making techniques and techniques left to us by our predecessors, we continue to preserve the old-fashioned methods, from growing kozo, the raw material of washi, to making paper. As the only remaining consistent production farmer, we are making discerning "Yukyu paper".
Starting with tending the kozo fields in the spring, weeding in the summer, mowing in the fall, and then peeling the kozo bark and exposing it to snow in the winter. It is done by hand as in the old days, and uses as little chemicals as possible.
The pure kozo washi made in this way is strong and elegant. It is said that the color of ink and paper will not change even after nearly a thousand years, and since 1974, "Yukyugami" has been used for the restoration of Katsura Imperial Villa and ancient documents designated as national important cultural properties.

We are proud of Yukyu Paper's excellent durability and quality, as well as the trust of our customers.
